From a counselor’s point of view: if we maintain that the counselor-client relationship is paramount to successful outcomes then adequate counselor/client ratios must be appliced.
The traditional role of the VR counselor and necessary skill set has been debated for many years. Whether the counselor’s primary task should focus on professional counseling or case management continues today due to the complexity and demands of the occupation. Recent research, however, suggests that to promote personal development and psychological growth in general, and more specifically vocational development, the VR counselor’s primary skills should focus on effective counseling strategies rather than case management, excessive paperwork and other administrative tasks (Rubin & Roessler, 2001).
This focus on counseling as an explicit and essential task is further corroborated by later studies that indicated VR counselors in state agencies are dissatisfied with the amount of counseling they are able to provide in comparison to other role expectations and accountability measures they must meet (Colling & Davis, 2005).
